Commissioning a Mural or Painting If you've never had custom art work designed, you may have some questions about how the process works. While every project is different, the following is a general out-line.
1. The initial conversation: Contact me by phone or e-mail. At this time the client will describe the project that he or she has in mind including subject, size, colors, etc. References can also be provided at this time.
2. This site visit: Gives the client a chance to review my portfolio of previous projects. The site visit allows me to see the space, take measurements, and discuss the needs and requirements of the room with the client. During this first meeting, the subject matter, mood, and desired effect of the mural/painting are discussed further. Pictures, if available, are also helpful. This information will serve as the inspiration to generate the images. Up until this point, there have been no fees incurred. If the client wishes to have me proceed further, the hourly design fee will be discussed.
2. Preliminary sketches: I will then produce a set of preliminary sketches based on the initial conversations. These sketches may represent several completely different possible approaches to the mural/paiting. This stage of the process is highly interactive and grows out of the give and take between the parties.
3. Contract: Once a sketch has been approved by the client I will be able to give the client a verbal price for the project (the cost depends on the size, location, and complexity of the image to be painted). At this time a contract will be drawn up outlining labor, the cost of materials, and the time by which the project will be completed. The contract will be signed by both parties. A partial payment (1/3) is requested up front to cover the cost of materials.
4. Scheduling: Sometimes a project can begin right away; other times there will be a short waiting period. If you have a specific date in mind you want the project completed by, you should get onto the schedule as soon as possible. My hours are flexible to accommodate yours.
*A Note For Our Out of Town Clients- I’m willing to travel to any destination to paint murals for business and home decor. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. If the job location is outside of the Chicagoland area there may be additional charges for travel. Some jobs can be worked on canvas or board and shipped, as well.
